My mission as an artist is to create art that exudes the positive energy that I pour into it, and make a difference through inspiring others to see life through a creative and optimistic lens.
Creating has been a staple in my life ever since I was young. I am grateful for growing up in a family where creativity was always encouraged. My parents divorced when I was young and I truly believe that expressing myself creatively helped me cope with the emotional turmoil around me. I was excruciatingly shy in elementary school and although I didn’t speak much at school, I reflect on it now and see that I was able to find my voice through art.
My artwork is inspired by my love for nature and my background in Ecology. In addition to painting I also work in Environmental Sustainability. I have always been drawn to animals and through a combination of color, mark making and energetic brush strokes I aim to capture and showcase their spiritual qualities. It is my hope that my artwork will both inspire environmental awareness and resonate with the soul.
Every painting is an intuitive journey led by layers of colors and patterns that eventually evolve into a cohesive piece. Although I usually have an idea of the subject matter that I would like to paint I find pure creative happiness and freedom in the process of trusting my intuition with each added layer. The joy that I find in my painting process inspired me to host and teach art retreats entitled Fearless Creativity for the Soul. The class is intended for both those who have never painted before and want to nurture their creative side, and those who may be feeling uptight or restricted in their current creative pursuits.
I have come a long way since my shy days and now find great joy in connecting with others through my art, and teaching art classes. One of my favorite parts about being an artist is being able to share a little slice of my soul through my work, and then hearing stories from viewers about how it sparks meaningful memories or emotions for them.
In my artistic career I am continuingly working on letting go of limiting beliefs, stepping outside of my comfort zone and fearlessly pursuing what I love to do, trusting we live in a world of limitless possibilities.
“This too shall pass” – I have always found this quote particularly powerful because it works in two forms. When things aren’t going my way, I find peace in knowing this situation won’t last forever and wounds will heal. On the flip side when something really wonderful is happening this quote reminds me to take it all in and live in the moment, because this too will not last forever and must be cherished for all that it is.
I have a couple favorite books that come to mind, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose by Eckhart Tolle. I love this book because I learned about the ego and that we can work to transcend past it to a higher state of consciousness. It helped me find the courage to identify what was really important to me in life and I am still continuously learning.
The Artist’s Way is another favorite of mine. This book is so powerful for creatives who are stuck in a creative rut. It has many powerful messages with two of my favorite being: “Our creative dreams and yearnings come from a divine source. As we move toward our dreams, we move toward our divinity,” and “Remember that it is my job to do the work, not judge the work.” I wrote both out and taped them to the wall in my artist studio!
