“To be successful, you have to have your heart in your business, and your business in your heart.” – Thomas Watson
I chose this quote because of what it means to me. Everyone needs to have an income and some of us choose to do that by opening a business and providing a service or product that we feel is important to ourselves and others. How that looks for each of you may be different but the underlying reasons for creating a business are usually the same. We feel called or inspired to do what we do every single day. It gives us meaning, a creative outlet and the satisfaction of living our dream.
Sometimes we get so caught up in the mainstream idea of business: make lots of money, get as many customers as you can and advertise all over the place so everyone knows who you are. This way of thinking, more often than not, leads to stress and anxiety, and often creates the complete opposite environment that we wanted to create in the first place.
This is how it was in my career also. There was a driving force in me to be successful, respected by the business community and really, really good at what I do. Once those things had been accomplished, I realized that something was still missing. I felt like success in business should not be just for those that had the resources to create elaborate campaigns but also for those smaller businesses and start-ups. I felt that I wanted to be able to get their brand out there and create a business they could be proud of that really spoke to their goals and desires. I knew that to help this type of business was what I really wanted to do.
Now, in my own business, my focus is on helping smaller companies, going above and beyond to really get to know the business and also the business owner’s goals. What are some things I can offer to help this business create the right kind of success for them? What does success look like to them? With this new direction came a renewed sense of pride in my business and the joy of doing what I love, but also I get to share in the success of others’ businesses as well. This way of doing business, for me puts my heart back in my business and my business back in my heart.
For those of you who have a goal, whether business or personal, keep striving for what you want but whatever you do, do it with your heart in it.
Never discard an opportunity to help someone.
