Harmony and Boundaries

by Gagan Mann ~

The cooler air and the falling leaves are showing us to once again let go of what doesn’t serve us.

One evening my daughter and I were walking, and it was cold and windy. As we walked, I said: “The winds help the trees shed their leaves.” Later that night she shared with me how amazed she was with what I said. She told me that it really blew her away because she realized that the elements are a huge part of the grand design.

In the MONTH OF OCTOBER, we move through the cardinal air of Libra and furthermore, our communications will have the cardinal air element as well. Mercury retrogrades and stays in the sign of Libra all through October. This cardinal activity is looking for dynamic action in relationships. Whether initiating or motivating action, the energy is seeking movement.

All air signs (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius) may feel like moving forward quickly and taking action. A well balanced air element is inspiring, refreshing, social and cooperative but an imbalanced air can be foggy, nervous and scattered. It’s important to check in and see how clear one feels before proceeding with conversation or projects. Some ways to use this energy is to write or journal your thoughts and ideas. Once something is in black and white, it may shift your perspective.

The zodiac sign of Libra looks for balance and harmony everywhere. The challenge is inner balance/harmony versus outer balance/harmony. Libras tend to see everything through reflection. The Libra world is created through connection and relation with the world.

A good exercise for this month might be take some time for yourself and explore what harmony looks like in our relationships.

It’s important to be as non-judgmental as possible. Just be curious. This exercise is to clear the canvas of what one should be and hopefully see just “what is.” Here are some questions to ask yourself. Take a pen and paper to write your answers.

  • Who am I when I am not with someone else?
  • Who am I when I am not a man or woman?
  • Who am I when I am not a mother or a father?
  • Who am I when I not serving someone?
  • Who am I when I am not a daughter or a son?
  • Who am I when I am not a friend?
  • Who am I when I am not a caretaker?

On SEPTEMBER 22, the Fall Equinox was a balance of equal light and equal darkness, giving the scales of Libra its rightful place. The seventh house of the zodiac starts to move from “I” oriented to “us.” Everything is in relations and connections. Mercury in Libra reinforces the idea of us working cohesively. When both Mars and Mercury is in Libra, both reinforce further the work necessary around relationships.

On SEPTEMBER 27, Mercury stations its final retrograde at 25 degrees of Libra until OCTOBER 18 and joins the party of retrogrades with Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Pluto and Neptune until OCTOBER 6. This weeklong party is not exclusive; everybody and anybody is invited.

The outer planets are generational thus represent the elders and our lineage. Whether we like it or not our reality in the current world situation is created by every single one of us. It’s time to do some inner work so we can shake off some of the cobwebs that clog our psyche. Try a new workshop, listen to music in a language you don’t know or understand, write your thoughts, call an old relative, get dirty in mud, explore your faith, hang upside down, get curious about a family story. All of these things force one to re-access, re-align, re-consider and realize.

As Rumi said: “What you are seeking, is seeking YOU.” Retrogrades hold a space to do just that. Take time to sit and just sit… If you are bothered, then sit some more.

From the end of September to ALL OCTOBER, the Sun and Mars play hand in hand. Make good use of this energy by moving forward with projects and if it gets to be too much then exercise or do anything physical to shake the extra charge your energy might be feeling from conjunction with Mars.

Remember The Sun is our prana and Mars is hot and fiery, with little water. Mars has no time to think of emotions and feelings (water). It’s the god of War.

ALL OCTOBER, Mars is in Libra conjunction to the Sun which activates our relationships even more. It can feel like a very charged up month when it comes to our immediate and extended relations; things might be in your face too much. Use this time to look at what is being reflected back.

Do this exercise with your partner, friends or family. You will need different colored balls of yarn and a large open space like a basement or backyard.

Every single person grabs a ball of yarn. Each person makes a circle around themselves and this circle can be as big or small as you like. The size of the circle around you dictates your boundary. The yarn represents an invisible wall around you. This is a good representation of what your boundary looks like. Just sit in your circle and see how it feels in relation to other people around you. Does it feel comfortable? Is it too big? Is it too small? Do you feel safe? Change the size as you wish and observe what comes up.

Most OCTOBER the Sun and Mars in Libra trine Jupiter in Aquarius. This is an easier aspect but boundaries in communications must be in check. Community and group relations may be auspicious.

OCTOBER 6 – The New Moon is in Libra. New moon intentions are very helpful when one has their natal chart. A natal chart shows what type of energy is in what area of the individual’s life. New moons are all about seeds, so consider something that might benefit a relationship. Do any of your relationships need more depth, rejuvenation, re-alignment, etc.

OCTOBER 6 – 12 – Venus is conjunction to the South Node and opposing the North Node. This can show up as repetitive patterns in relations. It’s the polarity of Sagittarius and Gemini – the fight between Ego and Spirit. It might be a time to look at who we are when we are not driven by ego alone, especially in our relationships.

From end of SEPTEMBER to OCTOBER 11, Mercury in Libra squares Pluto in Capricorn. Mercury forms a stressful aspect with Pluto and this might be the final time that a tough conversation comes up. Communications may be explosive and challenging; it’s time to embrace constructive criticism.

OCTOBER 20 – The Full Moon is in Aries. The polarity of Libra and Aries may bring up some healthy tensions in relationships; you might gain some objectivity.

OCTOBER 23 – The Sun moves into Scorpio. The sun moves from cardinal air to the fixed water element of Scorpio.

Have a wonderful October!
