Happy New Year!
Regardless of our zodiac sign, we are all coming into the new year feeling very exhausted. However, the new year month of January presents you with milder challenges and opportunities to take a step back from your usual self and invite some newness.
It’s All About Venus
At the beginning of January for two weeks, the Sun conjuncts Venus. The Sun is shining its bright light on what’s taking place and a forecast of upcoming issues that need attention. Take some time to understand what is occurring. Some questions to explore might be:
- What are some of my core beliefs?
- Am I in alignment with my beliefs?
- How genuine/authentic do I feel in my relationships?
Venus retrograded on December 19 at 26 degrees of Capricorn and will go down to 11 degrees of Capricorn before moving direct again on January 29.
Usually, Venus transits are very quick, but January gives us an extra-long period of working with its energy. As Robert Hand says in his book of Transits (Schiffer Publishing, 2001), “Venus rules the spontaneous power of attraction between two entities that differ in such a way that together they form a higher and more complex whole than would otherwise be possible.”
Venus will be retrograding for 40 days. Forty is a sacred number in many religions; precisely the days one needs to break free and create new ways of being.
In retrospect, what have you been attracting since November? Is it congruent to your inner and outer life? When Venus is in Capricorn, it is practical, responsible, conventional, serious, cautious and sets congruent goals. The shadow side of this type of energy is loneliness, status seeking, brooding and can be seduced by power.
Venus also conjuncts Pluto until mid-January lending to power struggles, jealousy, control and ending one form so another can begin. Our private and public life will be challenged and opportunities to bring some balance will open.
We symbolically have Aphrodite hanging out with the king of the underworld Pluto. This Venus in Capricorn is one that means business. As much as she is sensuality, sexuality, emotions and pleasure, she is also business, respect, values and responsibility. There are rules to follow and much work to be done. The planet Pluto mimics the Indian mythology god Shiva, the destroyer and the creator. Collectively in our world, relationships are going through a major remodeling and being stripped of egos. The heart wants what it wants but Pluto energy will come to destroy anything and everything that is not authentic.
Following is a brief explanation about how the Venus retrograde and Pluto conjunction will affect some of the zodiacs.
- Cardinal signs such as Aries, Libra and Capricorn will feel the challenges of this cycle as they pose the aspect of a square. Growth will come from challenges and we get to test the limits. Control issues may arise in relationships.
- Cancer makes an opposition to the Venus-Pluto conjunction posing challenges as Cancer people will have to balance out home life with work/professional life.
- Pisces and Scorpios will have greater advantage since their aspects are one of ease and flow. Don’t let the month of January pass you by without taking chances to peel off some layers and dig deeper into consciousness.
- Geminis and Leos will feel the heat in relationships as they find themselves making major adjustments to their way of being. The month of January demands paying attention to how to bring unhealthy patterns (in relationships) that sit beneath the surface to the limelight.
- Aquarius and Sagittarius are not making any aspect to Capricorn; they are both sitting only 30 degrees of where Venus-and Pluto are hanging out. Aquarius is affected more by Saturn right now, since there is a square to Uranus.
Other Key Dates
Mid-December – January 15, Mars sextiles Saturn. This offers opportunities to execute projects that require long periods of time to complete. As Christmas is over and the new year presents itself with new challenges around resources, these five weeks will feel manageable. One can still accomplish much with little resources.
December 25 – January 10, the Sun trines Uranus. New discoveries are coming to light. Don’t wait around to try something new; experiences that expand the mind await you. If you like surprises, then this transit might uplift your whole being as it exposes you to new heights of self.
December 29, Jupiter moved into Pisces. From mid-June of 2021 and all of July, Jupiter had dipped its auspicious toes into Piscean waters and now it’s here to stay in Pisces for a bit.
Boundaries, Boundaries, Boundaries! When the expansive Jupiter is swimming in the oceans, it might not be able to see where the limits are just like the fish that live in the water. Jupiter is optimism and expansiveness as well as gluttony and over-doing. The oceans don’t have boundaries; they are created only through learning to survive.
January 1 – January 15, the Sun conjuncts Venus. Usually it is a day transit but with Venus retrograde we have a longer period to express creativity and have some fun. Creating new friendship may be in the horizon.
January 2, there’s a new Moon in Capricorn. Start this new year’s energy by setting some intentions around taking care of your body (knees, joints, backbone, spinal muscles, patella, bones, tendons and ligaments, organs) to create balance. All these parts need care and nurturing.
This month the Sun in Capricorn moves through it’s 30 degrees, shedding light on different areas of our lives that have been in the hiding. It will strain our prana and therefore extra care is needed to breathe deeply and slowly. This reminds me a little of how people get very concerned about how they look in a certain posture during yoga, but the only thing that one should be concerned about in yoga is how they feel and breath.
January 3 – 21, Mercury conjuncts Saturn. Usually this is a quick transit but with the retrograde this provides an extended period to finish up some work which requires mental precision. You might find yourself holding back in communication, but constructive criticism can go a long way.
January 6 – January 25, the Sun conjuncts Pluto. The latter half of the month is out of sign but nevertheless the energy is still one of initiating momentum and radical transformations are taking place. Some layer of the self is being exposed and being stripped to the bare bones. Pay close attention to how the heart feels (if it’s in alignment with your true self). Remodeling the self requires knowing what needs to stay and what must be destroyed. Vulnerability is at a height, so how can you prepare yourself?
January 14, Mercury Retrogrades at 10 degrees of Aquarius and goes back to 24 degrees of Capricorn at which point it will station direct on February 2.
January 17, the full Moon is in Cancer. This is a good time to gain some objective about the original intentions which were set on January 2. Does it still feel authentic or does it need to be altered in some way?
Emotions may rise around safety and stability. Be mindful of your actions and ask yourself: “Am I acting out of fear of something or lack of something?”
January 20 – February 21, Mercury conjuncts Pluto. Communications are intense and penetrating during this time. You want the truth and nothing else will suffice. Since Mercury is in Aquarius, this intense mental activity can be around how the mass consciousness is handling current events. Usually, Mercury transits are so quick but with this retrograde (the later part of January and first three weeks of February) it presents an opportunity to work with an idea for an extended period. Be mindful of your words and ideas as they may be taken very seriously.
Most of January, Mars squares Neptune. Will and desire are dampened making it difficult to do anything. Self-doubt can set in and make it challenging to pursue anything worthwhile. So, conserve your energy and try to do things that aid in uplifting your spirit. Perhaps that hot yoga class might be something that fits the energy without overextending yourself. Have fun and remember the loudest thing in yoga should be your own breath.
Go breathe deeply and remind yourself that exhaustion doesn’t come from doing too much… it comes from doing too much of what we don’t love.
